Unit 1: Artist Statement

My practice is process orientated, governed by the materials I use to liberate lines and shapes, using drawing as a way of thinking through doing. This results in a singular pursuit between my works existing as drawing and being an inquiry of drawing practice simultaneously.

Often taking the form of installations, matter investigates other matter so that the language of the materials and their interaction with the space around them is heightened. Welded lines, ceramic parts, plaster pieces, digital works and drawings are manoeuvred and pushed through different states of object-hood in attempt to capture particular essences. These essences are never quite named. Notions of the body are alluded to, but never represented. I loosen bearings and definitions, both visually and verbally, to allow for a sense of ambiguity, so they can be this and that, they can exist here and there.

Materials which are hard become flexible, solids barely visible, and intangible gestures become fixed. I prioritise haptic elements that give an awareness to the senses, things which can be felt and not just seen. In this way my works become an enquiry not only in and of themselves, but also with their spatial relations, sensitively scrutinising the space around them. It creates a network of references, interactions and entanglements of parts and pieces and the moments between them. This encounter is something to be navigated, moved through, like a terrain. The viewer becomes implicit in this.
